California Car / Permit practice question · Road Signs
You approach a white rectangular sign reading 'SPEED LIMIT' above a number. What does it tell you to do?
Answer choices
- Parking is prohibited here at all times.
- You may not turn right at this location.
- The maximum legal speed in ideal conditions; slow down for weather, traffic, or road conditions.— Correct answer
- Vehicles over the posted weight may not use this road or bridge.
Why this is the answer
A speed limit sign gives the maximum speed that is legal in ideal conditions. Under California's Basic Speed Law, you may never drive faster than is safe for current conditions, so rain, fog, traffic, or pedestrians can make the safe speed lower than the number on the sign. It is not a parking, turning, or weight rule.
