Getting licensed in Ohio — the practical details
The questions people actually ask about the Ohio process, answered from official state sources.
What does an Ohio temporary permit cost at the counter?
The BMV fee schedule lists an operator temporary permit at $26.50, deputy registrar fee included. If your previous Ohio license expired more than six months but less than two years ago, the same schedule lists $29.50. Fees move, so check the current Documents and Fees page before you budget.
What is the youngest you can test in Ohio?
Fifteen years and six months. That is the minimum age for the vision screening and the knowledge test, and passing both is what qualifies you to buy the TIPIC. An unemancipated applicant under 18 needs a parent, guardian, custodian or other responsible person who will assume the obligation imposed by section 4507.07 to appear with identification and co-sign.
How is the Ohio written exam built?
Forty multiple-choice items on motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs, with a 75 percent pass mark. The BMV and the Ohio Driver Manual both publish those figures, and neither sets a separate minimum for the sign items or any other subject block.
How many wrong answers end the attempt?
The eleventh. Thirty right answers out of forty clear the 75 percent bar, which leaves exactly ten misses in hand. Nothing in the BMV's first-issuance page or the driver manual attaches a separate limit to any one part of the test.
Can you retake the knowledge test the same afternoon?
No. The wait after a failed knowledge test is at least 24 hours. In person there is no cap on the number of attempts but only one per day; online you get two attempts in a six-month period, also 24 hours apart.
How do you book the Ohio road test?
Through BMV Online Services, using the Schedule a Driving or Skills Test tile, or in person at a driver exam station. The BMV states that tests will not be scheduled by email. Bring the TIPIC and a vehicle that passes the pre-test inspection.
What eyesight clears an Ohio license with no restriction?
Under rule 4501:1-1-20, combined acuity of 20/40 or better without corrective lenses if you see with both eyes, or 20/30 or better without corrective lenses if you have vision in one eye. Below those figures Ohio restricts you to daytime driving, and denies the license to an applicant who cannot attain at least 20/70 with both eyes or at least 20/60 with one.
In which languages does Ohio give the written exam?
Text and audio in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Haitian Creole, Japanese, Russian, Somali and Spanish, plus text and video in American Sign Language. For any other language, the BMV schedules a proctored test at a driver exam station with an interpreter you bring.
What does an adult who flunks the road test have to do next?
An applicant 21 or older who fails a first attempt at the maneuverability or road portion must complete the abbreviated adult driver training course before trying again, unless a driver training course was finished in the twelve months before that failed test. Under 21, the wait is two days and there is no course.
How long do you have to buy the license after passing?
Sixty days from passing the driving and skills tests, at a deputy registrar license agency, where the TIPIC is surrendered. The same 60-day window applies earlier in the process to the TIPIC itself; let that one lapse and the vision screening and knowledge test both have to be repeated.
Do Ohioans over 18 still need a driving school?
At 18, 19 and 20, yes: the Ohio Traffic Safety Office states that from September 30, 2025 those applicants must take an Ohio-approved driver training course and complete 50 hours of supervised practice. From 21 the picture splits — the driver manual sets its own course-and-50-hours requirement for temporary residents in that age bracket, while for everyone else the course becomes mandatory only after a failed first driving test.
