Texas Car / Permit practice question · Sharing the Road
When may a bicyclist legally ride out in the lane instead of hugging the right edge?
Answer choices
- Only after dark, when a bicycle is harder to see
- Never — a bicycle must always stay at the right edge
- When the lane is too narrow for a car and a bicycle to travel safely beside each other— Correct answer
- Only on streets posted at 30 mph or less
Why this is the answer
Bicyclists are required to ride as near the right edge as possible, but not when the lane is too narrow to be shared safely side by side. Even then, the handbook lists other cases where a rider may take the full lane, such as passing another vehicle or preparing for a left turn. Night, or a 30 mph limit, does not decide it.
