Texas Car / Permit practice question · Safe Driving Practices
When you meet an oncoming vehicle at night, Texas law requires you to switch from high to low beams before you are within:
Answer choices
- 500 feet of the oncoming vehicle— Correct answer
- 50 feet of the oncoming vehicle
- 100 feet of the oncoming vehicle
- 1,000 feet of the oncoming vehicle
Why this is the answer
Use low beams when you are within 500 feet of an approaching vehicle, and also when you follow closely, within 300 feet, behind another vehicle. Fog, heavy rain, sleet, snow and dust call for low beams as well. Looking toward the lower right side of your lane, away from oncoming headlights, helps you avoid being dazzled.
