California Car / Permit practice question · Road Signs
What does a downward-pointing (inverted) red-and-white triangular sign mean?
Answer choices
- Stop and wait for a green light
- Slow down and yield the right-of-way— Correct answer
- No U-turn allowed
- Merge left immediately
Why this is the answer
A red yield sign tells you to slow down and be ready to stop so any vehicle, bicyclist, or pedestrian can pass before you continue. You do not always have to stop completely, but you must give way to whoever is already there. Waiting for a green light describes a traffic signal, not this sign.
