Texas Car / Permit practice question · Parking & Stopping
Before you walk away from a parked car, Texas law requires you to:
Answer choices
- Leave the engine idling if the weather is cold
- Leave the transmission in neutral
- Leave a window down so the alarm can be heard
- Shut off the engine, lock the ignition, take the key, and set the brake— Correct answer
Why this is the answer
It is illegal to leave your car standing unattended with the engine running, so you must turn off the engine, lock the ignition, take out the key and set the brake. On any grade, also point the front wheels toward the curb or the edge of the road. Leaving the motor running because it is cold, or leaving the car in neutral, breaks the rule.
