Texas Car / Permit practice question · Speed & Space Management
How does driving at a higher speed affect the distance needed to stop your vehicle?
Answer choices
- speed has no effect on stopping distance
- higher speed shortens the stopping distance
- only the brakes, not speed, affect stopping
- the higher your speed, the greater the distance needed to stop— Correct answer
Why this is the answer
Stopping takes more room the faster you go. The handbook says the faster you drive, the greater the gap to keep behind the car ahead. A stop includes the reaction distance you cover before you act, plus the braking distance until the car halts, and both stretch as speed rises. Brakes alone do not set the distance, and speed never shortens it.
