1. A railroad crossing is posted with a sign reading 'Exempt.' For a driver who would normally have to stop at every crossing, this means:
Correct answer: No full stop is required, but you still slow down and check the tracks carefully
Crossings signed as exempt or abandoned, streetcar crossings, a green traffic signal, and an officer or flagman directing traffic all remove the mandatory stop. Reduced speed and a careful look down the rails are still expected.
2. A sign posting a clearance such as '12 FT 6 IN' at an underpass means a driver should:
Correct answer: Make sure the vehicle's height is under that clearance before proceeding
That number is the overhead clearance. If your loaded vehicle is taller than the posted height, you must not drive under it — find another route to avoid striking the structure.
3. A round yellow sign with a black 'X' and the letters 'RR' means:
Correct answer: A railroad crossing is ahead, so slow down and be ready to stop
The round yellow sign with the black 'X' and 'RR' is the advance warning for a railroad crossing. It tells you to slow down, look, listen, and be prepared to stop for a train.
4. A crossbuck sign stands at the entrance to a railroad grade crossing. What does it require of you?
Correct answer: You must give up the right-of-way to any train using the crossing
The crossbuck marks the grade crossing itself and works like a yield sign for trains. A train always has priority, so let it pass before you move onto the rails.
5. A black-and-yellow warning sign showing a truck on a downhill grade tells a commercial driver to:
Correct answer: Prepare for a steep downgrade by selecting a low gear and safe speed
A steep-downgrade warning sign means a long or steep hill is ahead. Choose a safe low gear and speed before you start down so the engine can do most of the braking.
6. A speed limit sign is posted on the curved ramp leading off a freeway. Why should a loaded truck often travel slower than that number?
Correct answer: The posted figure is chosen with cars in mind and can be unsafe for a tall, heavily loaded vehicle
Exits and entrances are among the more dangerous places for large vehicles, especially where a ramp turns and drops at the same time. Get the speed down before you reach the curved part.
7. On a long mountain downgrade you pass a sign posting a maximum safe speed. How should you treat that figure?
Correct answer: As a limit you must never go above on that grade
A posted safe speed on a grade is a ceiling, not a target to reach. Signs that give the length and the steepness of the hill deserve the same attention while you plan the descent.
8. Placards fixed to the outside of a commercial vehicle are there to do what?
Correct answer: Identify the hazard class of the cargo being carried
Placards are warning signs on the vehicle so that anyone nearby, including firefighters and police, can tell what class of dangerous cargo is aboard. A placarded load carries four matching signs: one ahead, one behind and one on each side.
9. A small sign mounted beneath a crossbuck at a highway-rail crossing carries the numeral 2. What is it telling you?
Correct answer: There are two sets of tracks to get across
A plate under the crossbuck states how many sets of rails the crossing carries. Knowing that more than one set is there reminds you that a second train can be hidden behind the first.
10. Which emblem on the back of farm machinery or a similar vehicle warns you that it cannot keep up with traffic?
Correct answer: A red triangle with an orange middle
Tractors, mopeds and construction equipment often display this triangular badge. Picking it out early gives you the distance a heavy vehicle needs to slow down safely.
